Manchester United 2019/20 Season Re-Cap (Third of the season edition)

It has been a struggle for the mighty Red Devil’s this season, only winning 4 out of their first 12 games in the Premier League, while drawing 4 and losing 4 in the other remaining 8 games. With this, we currently sit at 7th on the table with 16 points, 9 points outside of the top 4, and 18 points off Liverpool at top spot, which is where we expect the boys in red to be in and around each and every season.

We have had some good results, including a 4-0 home win against Chelsea to open the campaign. We also got good results against Leicester City, winning 1-0 at home, 1-1 with top of the table Liverpool, and two 3-1 wins against Norwich away and Brighton at home respectively.

However, different to the Sir Alex Ferguson days, we have had way too many bad results and performances. Some of these include a 2-1 loss at home to Crystal Palace, 1-1 draw away at Southampton, 2-0 loss away at West Ham, 1-0 loss away at Newcastle, and a 1-0 loss at Bournemouth. Too many bad results when we expect Manchester United to beat the majority, if not all of the teams, we have lost to so far in the Premier League.

There have been some bright spots amongst the squad however. The biggest bright spot of the season would have to be the emergence of two young guns in Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Daniel James is currently equal 2nd in goals in the Premier League this season with 3, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is currently equal 2nd in tackles made with 54, which includes him also missing 2 games through injury, which makes this stat even more impressive.

Another positive is being able to have a lot of the young players get an opportunity at Premier League level. Some of the young players this season include Defenders Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe, Midfielders Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Joel Garner, and Forward Mason Greenwood. We have also seen some players have more expanded roles than originally thought, including Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira and Daniel James.

Even though the boys have struggled some what to start the season, there is hope for optimism. The team are making strides in fixing the problems left by previous managers, and getting a lot of youth in the squad to build success for multiple years. It will be interesting to see how the boys respond after the international break when they take on Sheffield United away from home. With a win there, we could jump to as high as 5th, and possibly within 6 or 7 points of the top 4. This in tandem will give us something to build on for the next two thirds of the season.
